Precinct 2A1 and 2A2, Southkey, Johor Bahru
Late last year, we completed the Southkey Development in Johor Bahru. We started the project back in 2012 and, as usual in architecture, it’s been a long journey. It started at a time when the Johor Bahru market was only starting to pick up. In fact, there was even skepticism on the part of the Clients whether the project was going to be a success. Well, I don’t think that’s even an issue now, but hindsight is a wonderful mistress when she’s doing your bidding.
Precinct 2A1 and 2A2 were the pioneer plots over a much larger site covering all of 330 acres. The brief was for Strata Shop-Offices, which at that time, was the first of its kind in Johor Bahru. Previous to this, all of the Shop-Office developments were sold based on individual titles. Admittedly, there was also a concern on the public’s reception of this new ownership model. The JB crowd is a fickle lot, the take up of anything new is always slow. Even more so when it involves the legal rights of property ownership. Again, with hindsight, this was really no cause of concern.
We wanted to design something that acknowledges the fact that over it’s lifespan, the Architecture might just disappear behind a screen of signals. Walk or drive through any Shop-Office district in Malaysia, and it’s never the architecture that stands out – it’s the media. The layers of signage fight with one another to stand out. Hence, we reduced the design to very simple lines, if anything we just wanted to play with the 3-Dimensionality of the facade, to create ins and outs that would not disappear behind a sea of graphics.
